Napoli :
L’antica Neapolis (dal greco Néa Pólis, “Città Nuova”) era in origine una colonia greca e venne in seguito conquistata dai romani nel VI sec a.c. (un esempio della dominazione romana sono le rovine di Pompei ed Ercolano, distrutta dall’eruzione del Vesuvio nel 79 d.c.). Napoli è la città più grande del sud d’Italia ed è meravigliosamente ubicata sui pendii e alla base delle colline che circondano la baia di Napoli, un’appendice del Mar Tirreno. La baia, dominata dal Monte Vesuvio (vulcano), si estende da Capo Misena, nel nord, alla penisola di Sorrento, nel sud, ed è cosparsa di città e ville. Al suo ingresso si trovano le favolose isole di Capri, Ischia e Procida. Napoli è una delle più belle città in Europa ed è ricca di storia, arte, tradizioni culturali e gastronomiche. E’ il luogo di nascita della Pizza Margherita – così chiamata perché venne servita alla regina Margherita durante una sua visita alla città - preparata con mozzarella, pomodoro e basilico che rappresentano rispettivamente il bianco, il rosso e il verde della bandiera italiana. Oltre al cibo (che forma le basi della maggior parte della cucina italo-americana), la città è famosa anche per la sua pittoresca vita di strada, la sua allegria, le sue canzoni, particolarmente nello stile del bel canto e i suoi festival. E’ anche un centro commerciale ed industriale molto importante oltre ad essere un considerevole porto con cantieri navali e svariate attività. Tra le attrazioni della città ci sono castelli medioevali, chiese e un’università. Nel 1995 il centro storico di Napoli venne dichiarato dall’ UNESCO Patrimonio Mondiale. Ricordati inoltre di visitare anche la cosiddetta “Napoli Sotterranea”, chilometri di tunnel sotto la città che erano in origine i bacini idrici greco-romani scavati nella morbido tufo, pietra sulla quale e con la quale la città è stata costruita.
