Padoue :
Au temps des romains, alors appelé Patavium, c'était l'une des plus importantes villes d'Italie du nord. Padua est l'une des plus charmantes villes du nord de l'Italie, grâce au nombre de touristes qui est beaucoup moins élevé qu'à Milan ou Venise. Padoue a une culture riche et offre une atmosphère sereine. La ville est située le long de la rivière Bachiglione, à seulement 20 kilomètres de Venise. Son histoire date de 300 ans avant JC. Durant la période romaine c'était un lieu de culture et la ville de bon nombre d'écrivains latins, comme Livy. Plus tard, pendant la Renaissance italienne, de grands savants - tel Galileo - ont enseigné à son université qui est l'une des plus vieilles d'Europe (elle date de 1222), et de nombreux artiste comme Donatello ou Michelangelo on vécu ou visité la ville. A part Rome ou Florence, Padoue rivalise avec n'importe quelle autre ville d'Italie en ce qui concerne l'art. Les fresques de la chapelle Scrovegni sont les œuvres d'art de Giotto, considéré comme le père fondateur de la peinture italienne. La Basilique del Santo, une église construite au 14ème siècle pour abriter les restes de Saint Anthony, présente l'autel de Donatello. Cette œuvre est l'un des trois plus grands ensembles de sculpture que le monde occidental n'ait jamais eu. Le jardin botanique de la ville, qui est à 5 minutes à pied de la Basilique del Santo, est le plus ancien au monde: il date de 1545. N'oubliez pas de visiter le marché en plein air du Palazzo della Ragione et le Prato della Valle.
