In the 1930s, Cascais was a tiny fishing village that attracted artists and writers to its little cottages. It also enjoyed the patronage of the Royal family when Portugal was still a monarchy. Cascais is the highlight of the Costa do Sol or The Portuguese Riviera. The life of fishermen still goes on here, be sure to attend the Auctions, called lotas, right on the main square. In the harbour, the colourful fishing boats share space with the jetset’s yachts. Cascais is 6.5km form Estoril, and 61km from Lisbon.
