Antwerp

The diamond capital of the world, a pocket-sized metropolis in the heart of Europe: Antwerp is the largest city in the Belgian region of Flanders. Located on the banks of the river Scheldt, these fascinating city is the second biggest port in Europe with a steady role at the crossroads of world trade. The cobbled streets and the historical buildings suggest the grandeur of the city in the 16th century, its golden age which enriched its centre with five jewels of Gothic and Baroque architecture, the five immense churches which frame the historic heart of Antwerp: the Cathedral of Our Lady, with its 123 m steeple and its collection of paintings by Rubens, the Baroque masterpiece of St Charles Borromeo’s Church, St Paul’s Church with its striking interior and fifty paintings by renowned Antwerp masters Rubens, Van Dyck and Jordaens, the late Gothic St Andrew’s Church and the Brabant Gothic St James’ Church which boasts the tomb of Rubens behind the main altar. Proud of its Medieval, Gothic and Renaissance heritage, in the 20th and 21st centuries Antwerp showed the will to break away from old traditions and start thinking forward: completed in 1905, Antwerp’s Central Station is one of the world's most remarkable railway stations, a symbol of modernism known as the 'Railway Cathedral', it is today one of the city’s key landmarks. A ‘triomfelycke coopstad' (triumphant shopping city) in the 16th century, Antwerp is still today a shoppers paradise, with its pedestrian streets and bustling shopping centres.
