The City of Brno is the Czech Republic's second largest. Brno lies in a very central part of Europe and therefore it is not too far from other important European cities such as Prague, Bratislava and Vienna. Brno is an notable tourist centre for those interested in exploring the natural and cultural attractions of the South Moravian Region. To the north of Brno lies the protected area of the Moravian Karst and to the south you can find the Moravian vineyards with their characteristic wine cellars. Moreover, the city of Brno is surrounded by magnificent forests offering an ideal setting for hiking and cycling. Yet, the city is also a very interesting cultural centre, filled with many noteworthy historical sites. During the industrial revolution, when it was under Habsburg government, it was known as the "the Moravian Manchester” because of its development. In the 20th century, it took on the character of a modern city thanks to the construction of buildings in the functionalist style. The most notable example of modern architecture in Brno is the Tugendhat Villa – a site inscribed on the UNESCO’s World Cultural Heritage List. Today Brno offers many possibilities of cultural enjoyment in its numerous theatres, museums, cinemas and clubs. Brno is also a city of modern shopping and entertainment centres.
